Quick Summary

How to Use This Chart

Step 1

Name the hand

Hard, soft, pair, natural blackjack, 21, or bust comes before every recommendation.

Step 2

Read the dealer

Dealer 2-6, 7-9, 10, and ace create different pressure zones.

Step 3

Check the rule

Double, split, surrender, and soft-17 rules can affect the study answer.

Training Assumption

This chart is a beginner training reference, not a universal casino rule sheet. Strategy can shift with deck count, surrender rules, doubling restrictions, blackjack payout, and whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17.

Hard Totals: First-Pass Study Chart

Player totalDealer 2-6Dealer 7-9Dealer 10-A
8 or lessHitHitHit
9Double where allowed; otherwise hitHitHit
10-11Double where allowed; otherwise hitDouble selectively; otherwise hitHit against strongest upcards
12Stand against 4-6; otherwise hitHitHit
13-16StandHitHit unless surrender is available in specific matchups
17 or moreStandStandStand

Soft Totals: Ace Flexibility

Soft hands include an ace counted as 11 without busting. The ace creates flexibility, but the dealer upcard and double rules still matter.

Soft handDealer 2-6Dealer 7-9Dealer 10-A
A + 2 to A + 6Study double opportunities; otherwise hitHitHit
A + 7Often stand or double by rule contextStand or hit by upcardHit against strongest upcards
A + 8 or A + 9StandStandStand

Pairs

Pair strategy is not the same as total strategy. Ask whether two separate hands improve the decision shape under the current rules.

PairStudy noteRule check
A,A and 8,8Special split study cases for beginners.Check split-ace draw limits.
10,10 and 5,5Usually not treated as ordinary split candidates.Study total value before pair instinct.
2,2 through 7,7Dealer upcard and double-after-split rules matter.Review table-specific split rules.
9,9A nuanced pair where dealer context matters.Compare split value against made total.

Responsible Reminder

Strategy charts improve decision quality, not certainty. Blackjack remains a game of chance with variance, risk, and possible losses.
